A theme I always enjoyed has been from Family Matters. It is light, easy to listen to, and makes me feel good. Family is important to most of us and I think this theme encompasses those thoughts.
This is one of my favorite family show theme songs. I understand that it is based on the earlier version of the Addams Family. I wasn't even born when that was on the air though so I had to go with the 90's cartoon version.
Some of the best theme music for television shows are simply allocated from other artists. One such theme song is the intro to the Golden Girls. Written by Andrew Gold whom I wouldn't even have known was a song writer other wise. The song is great, very catchy and one that can be stuck in my head for a while.
The Wonder Years was one of my favorite shows growing up. I loved seeing this show about Kevin's exploits through the 60's. The theme song was a cover of a Beetles song by Joe Cocker and it rocked. Have A Little Help From My Friends was a great Beatles song but Cocker own's it in his version as well. In my mind the song and show are forever intertwined in my mind.
Malcolm In The Middle's theme song was originally written for the series by They Might Be Giants specifically for the show. So it differs from the previous two examples but I felt it was relevant. Great show. Great intro. The song really captures the feeling of being a kid and sets the tone for the series.
All of these themes will go down in history as some of the best. Objectively, Malcolm in the Middle would win out because it was written for the show. Subjectively, I enjoy the others just a bit more.
Tales From The Darkside was a T.V. show that ran from 1983 to 1988. It also was made into a movie. The content of the show wasn't particularly scary but my god the theme of the show is grotesque. It still gives me chills when I play it. Ugh. That creepy guy talking and that simple tone repeating.
When I was like 7 or 8 and my parents would be watching Tales From The Darkside I would instantly wake up in terror mode. This consisted of me screaming for my mom. It honestly didn't matter how low or loud the T.V. was if I caught the tune I was activated.
My parents used to get a kick out of my terror and would turn this on just to wait for me to rush into the living room screaming. Yeah, cruel and unusual.... but thanks to my Mom for suggesting this as a post for the blog.
Have you ever had a song become lodged in your head? It happens to me quite a bit. I used to watch Sonic the Hedgehog when I was a kid, the Saturday morning (SatAM) version. Now my kids watch Sonic on Netflix. The intro track to the series is extremely catchy and hard to displace once it is on repeat mentally. I sometimes can hear my daughter singing it from her room and then it is stuck in my head for a while. You can find out for yourself. Sonic the Hedgehog SatAM
